Today I read a news article stating that men living on a small fijian island, are no longer allowed to wear pants on Sundays, but must, instead, wear a traditional island sarong known as a sulu.
What surprised me even more was that it was the Methodist church which had issued the order so that men could learn how to respect Sunday, a holy day. According to those who enacted the new law, following it would also bring good luck to the island.
In addition to the ban on wearing pants, they are forbidden to use motorized transportation or do any work on Sunday.
Apparently, most people are making an attempt to obey the new law, with some grumbling about how they don't see how wearing the sulu is going to draw them closer to God. My husband is Scottish, but I can imagine that he would be pretty unhappy if anyone passed a law requiring him to wear a kilt on one day every week.
