The Ultimate, Very Last-Minute Christmas Gift

We just got back from a quick trip to deliver Christmas gifts to our daughter and her family, and were amazed at the amount of  traffic we saw on the road.

Cars heading toward the local mall were backed up as far as you could see, and even the through lane we were in was loaded with cars.  Had this many people waited until only two days before Christmas to do their Christmas shopping, I wondered.

Luckily, I was not one of them this year, but have been guilty of waiting until the last minute more  times than I care to admit.  If you are unfortunate enough to still be wracking your brain for "Just the right," gift for this one or that one, I have a great idea for you, and you won't have to even leave home to take care of it.

If someone on your list has a Nook or Kindle reader, give them a set amount of dollars to spend on electronic e-books  this year.  For as little as $10, their Kindle or Nook can have up to 10 new novels or non-fiction titles delivered in just a few minutes.  No anxious waiting for the mailman or the UPS truck to arrive.  Full-length romances, westerns, science fiction, cookbooks, or horror novels are available for as little as 99 cents each although the average price is more like $2.99 each.  Non-fiction usually runs a little higher as do works by best selling authors, but they are still much cheaper than buying the same title in a regular bookstore.

All you need to do is write a little note to your gift recipient telling them what amount they have to spend, and then set  them down in front of a computer open to amazon.com for Kindle books, or barnesandnoble.com for Nook books and let them browse.  Their choices will be downloaded automatically, and available for reading the next time they open their e-reader.  What fun.

Reading tastes vary from one individual to another, but one of the Kindle books I especially enjoyed and highly recommend is, Babylon's Ark, which tells the story of how a caring conservationist managed to rescue and relocate the animals from an Iraqi zoo during the Iraq war.  Many of the animals had been killed, but American soldiers were feeding and caring for those that remained. A fascinating story.  Click on  the photo if you would like to learn more about the story.

What?  You have your Christmas shopping   already done?  Then reward yourself and do a little e-book browsing for yourself today.  If you love reading the way I do, choosing 4 or 5 new titles from a million or so will be the highlight of your day.  Even if you won't have time to read  them until after the holidays, just the thought of them waiting there in your own little private library read to be accessed anytime you have a free moment, will be a comforting thought.
