Every once in a while I read something that I just can't believe is happening in the United States of America. Today was one of those days.
It seems that a young lady posted a desire for a Christian roommate on the bulletin board at her church. Someone saw it there and made a civil rights complaint against her.
Mind you, this request was on the bulletin board of a church.
Since when don't we have a right to decide who will be sharing a room with us? Is this young lady supposed to take anyone who comes along to sleep in her room with her?
A number of years ago, my husband and I owned an apartment building. The apartments were small, the yard was even smaller and there was no place for children to play so I advertised for adults only. A local civil rights group informed me that we could not discriminate against children.
One couple told us they had one child, and we found out after they moved in that they had four.
A policeman living one of our apartments informed us that the couple across from him had been arrested on drug charges several times.
Two college students rented one of the apartments and started using it as a place to party all night, every night, with their friends.
The same civil rights group told us that it was none of our business how many children a tenant had, or how many times they had been arrested, or how they chose to spend their leisure time. Needless to say, we didn't last long in the apartment renting business.
My feeling was, and still is, that since my husband and I built that apartment building, we certainly should have been able to say how it was to be used. A lot of love, care, and money went into building a place we envisioned as a place where people could live quietly with caring and friendly neighbors. Instead, we ended up with drug addicts, lots of children crammed into an apartment that was too small for them, and several partying teens.
Now we hear that a young lady can't even request a Christian roommate, on a church bulletin board. What is our country coming to? Freedom of religion seems to have turned into freedom from religion.
