Every year around election time, I come down with what my husband refers to as a severe case "Election Blues."
I have to admit, that for a couple of weeks before every election, I am glued to the computer or TV for news about every aspect of the then-current election. I also make my husband the often reluctant target of my ranting and raving about candidates I don't agree with and issues that don't seem to be going the way I wish they would. But that is only for a normal year around election time.
Every 4th year, when the presidential election rolls around, my election blues malady becomes much worse. So bad in fact, that I have seriously considered heading for Canada or Mexico for a month ahead of time, hoping to avoid the effect of my illness. I'm sure my family wishes I would.
Alas, the election of 2012 has resulted in the worst case of election blues I have ever had. My housekeeping, which has never been anything to brag about, is about as bad as it can get without the health department stepping in to force me to do something about it. I wonder if spousal neglect, due to election blues, has ever been cited as grounds for divorce? My husband, reading over my shoulder, wryly tells me there is a first time for everything. I think that means he is getting a little upset with the chaos around here.
Meals never seem to be on time; we seldom leave home due to some important speech or political debate coming up on TV; certain people aren't invited for dinner because an argument over candidates is sure to spoil the meal; and I'm constantly whining about the nasty reactions I get to opinions I dare to express online---intelligent and well thought out opinions if I do say so myself.
I remember thinking,(and probably stating more than once), previous to the 2008 election that if the opposition won that election, our country would never survive. Well, it did survive, although many would say, "barely," and here we are, predicting the end of the world if the opposition should win again.
At least, no matter who wins the November 6th election, my election blues should disappear.
Unfortunately, depending on which party wins, post-election depression may then kick in, but I'm a great believer in worrying about only one thing at a time, so I'll just wait and cross that road IF and WHEN we come to it.
